In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
A Folk Legend Worth Telling Again and Again
Neutral Milk Hotel and its frontman, Jeff Mangum, have been shrouded in intrigue and speculation since Jeff's breakdown and the band's hiatus that began mid tour, post album release in 1998. Music blogs and fans were ecstatic when the band announced a reunion tour on their website in 2013, an end to the relative silence of Jeff Mangum and his bandmates regarding NMH. Why? Because Neutral Milk Hotel had crafted one of the greatest underground indie albums of all time in 1998 and seemingly dissolved into myth as Jeff withdrew from the public eye.
When ITAOTS was first released it garnered critical acclaim for its experimental sound and instrumentation as well as abstract and evocative lyricism. The initial public following was small but has slowly built and maintained momentum for more than a decade as it continues to earn the praise of critics and artists and those hipster people.
The future for NMH and Jeff is uncertain as they are currently on the band's last tour for "the neverending now." They are odd. But they are legends. And this album is amazing.
Thanks, Jeff Mangum.
